Abstract

Pavlatova had the spirits of black humour, in Words Words Words(1991), she revealed ironic social behaviour by using gags and exaggerated figures. In addition, contrary to the title, there was no exactly word through the film, but full of a variety of shapes and symbols. In this essay, I explained how Pavlatova visualized communication through common symbols, and analysed the narrative structure of Words Words Words in term of ‘theatre space’.

Main body

1.Visualize communication

Theory: symbol invests its objects meaning, and it has the historical seriality. (In other words, audiences’ common sense and imagination help them to understand metaphors.)

Example: a. bubbles b. use blocks and puzzles to present the change of a romantic relationship.

2.Narrative sturcture

theory: the minimalist inflections of absurdist theatre echoed the graphic conception and freedom of expression in cartoon films and the use of the ‘gag’ as a radical device to reveal or disrupt behavioural and environmental orthodoxies.

Explain: regarding the bar as a stage. with the movement of camera( switchinhg within frames), audience saw different gags happened in bar, which revealed ironic social behaviour. So many rediculous and exaggreted events took placed in a such small bar, its a kind of black humour. Also, through the beginning with empty bar to a busy evironment, at the end it went to empty and quiet bar again, which just as the same as the opening and closing of a theatre
